January 17 - BAFTA Nominations
DGA Update : It might be time to call it...War Horse is not going to be the frontrunner a lot of us thought. It failed to convince the Critics (25 groups announced their winners, not one single win in the 8 main categories), the WGA (it seems like the script isn't even in serious consideration), the DGA (Spielberg didn't even get a director nomination from the otherwise starlovin HFPA) and it doesn't have the oh-so-crucial support from the Actors (SAG), either. It will still get a best picture nomination and Spielberg might sneak in at the Oscars, too, but the film definitely won't be the big winner in the end. Meanwhile DGA offered no big surprises, the expected quartet (Hazanavicius, Scorsese, Payne, Allen) continued their winning streak and the lucky 5th was last year's runner-up, David Fincher whose 'Dragon Tattoo' might not have started out strong, but in the end it received the nominations that REALLY count : PGA, DGA, WGA. Now it should be considered a top5-contender...unless the Academy pulls a 'Dark Knight' on us, Fincher will get a Best Director nomination...his third in 4 years.
WGA Update : Several scripts were ineligible (The Artist, Shame, Martha Macy, Albert Nobbs, Drive, Margin Call, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Iron Lady and My Week with Marilyn), The Artist is the only one that has a strong shot at an Oscar nomination, although all the others seem like viable surprises, especially if the British-vote kicks in and secures a nod for the critically acclaimed Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy OR if the rumors are true and the Academy fell head over heels in love with My Week with Marilyn. Despite not receiving any major nominations so far, I wouldn't count out critical darlings Margin Call and Drive, either.

Phantom, which supporting actress do you think the AMPAS will drop? Bejo? Chastain? McTeer? McCarthy? Woodley? I can't figure it out.
ReplyDeleteUgh, tough one. I consider Bejo-Spencer-Chastain locks, but there is still a tiny chance Chastain will cancel herself out. The critics groups are definitely divided (2 awards for 'The Tree of Life', 2 awards for 'Take Shelter', 2 awards for both AND 'The Help'), but critics don't vote for Oscars and the big organizations all nominated her for 'The Help', so hopefully it will stay that way. On paper, I think she is a lock, but if the Academy goes for 'The Tree of Life', she might lose to herself, or maybe score a nod for the Malick-film... unlikely, at this point.
ReplyDeleteWhat is interesting, that IF Chastain is also a lock, we still have 2 slots to fill and at least 3 viable contenders...and all 3 have seriously damaging factors to overcome : McCarthy is in a broad comedy, something the Academy NEVER goes for, but if they award Bridesmaids a bp-nod (despite the great precursors, I don't think that will happen, or is there really 5% No1 there ?), they will definitely vote for McCarthy, too...hell, even SAG did. Then there is McTeer whose performance received raves, but her film didn't and could a film that is considered relatively weak, score TWO acting nominations ? I don't think so. Strangely enough, I think Woodley has a better shot at this than McCarthy and McTeer, although she doesn't even have the crucial SAG-nod and those two do. For now, I think the most impressive performance won't get in : Janet McTeer's Hubert. Quite simply, because Bridesmaids and The Descendants have great support and Albert Nobbs doesn't. But then again, I used that theory last year and said that Garfield will survive the SAG-snub because he is in a top2-bp-contender and we all know how that one ended, so Woodley isn't a sure thing, either. Anyway, here is my 2 cents :
